SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

The city will crack down on those that illegally park in designated fire lanes.

Starting Wednesday, April 3, the Sioux City Police Department's "Volunteers In Police Service" are patrolling fire lanes, and issuing $30 citations to unauthorized vehicles.

The main reason for cracking down is safety.

"It also becomes difficult for people with disabilities trying to enter into buildings and businesses, as well as sometimes children that might dart out from a store and you can't see them in between cars that are parked in the fire lanes," said Rita Donnelly, Volunteer Coordinator.

The city council recently approved the change in code to allow the citations to be issued.
