Siouxland preps for annual 'Steak Reception'

Next week, local leaders head to the nation's capital to lobby lawmakers at the annual Siouxland Chamber of Commerce Steak Reception.

For 59 years, Siouxland has spoken while Washington has listened. Once known as the annual steak dinner, the now leaner reception is less meat, more meet and greet.

"It allows our attendees to be more interactive and make an impact with these members of congress that we came here to visit," said Barbara Sloniker at the reception in 2012.

Last year was overflowing with requests for flood repair.

This year, Sioux City leaders are worried about flood insurance. New federal requirements would force some in Leeds to buy up.

"We're taking a request out this trip, this year," said Community Development Manager Jeff Hanson.

Hanson says the city will ask for an extension of the insurance purchase deadline and for funds to improve ponding areas near the Floyd River Valley.

"Then in return, we can have a majority of that area released from the new requirements," said Hanson.

Not everyone going will be "steak-ing" a claim, though.

"We're really out there to showcase the incredible amount of economic activity we've had," said Executive Director of North Sioux City Economic Development Kory Menken.

Menken says they have a lot to tout. Expansions and new construction will add jobs and millions of dollars to the local economy. They want lawmakers to know.

"They only hear from us when we have complaints. It's equally important to let them know about all the positive things that are happening out here," said Menken.

This year, topics are coming in many flavors. Will Washington have a taste for Siouxland? We'll find out when dinner is served.

This year's conference convenes Wednesday morning, and lasts until Thursday evening.
