Siouxland professionals gather to raise awareness about child abuse

Former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky is in prison convicted of 45 counts of child sexual abuse.

It's a big reason why groups of law enforcement officials, and social workers, gathered inside the Sioux City Convention Center Friday to learn how to protect children from abuse.

Keynote speaker Roger Canaff, who's a former prosecutor and current anti-abuse advocate, says keeping kids safe requires vigilance.

He says, that way, you'll know if something's wrong.

"If clear thinking, common sense adults have a suspicion that a child is being harmed, the child usually is and occasionally, they're wrong, but that's what the civil system is for," said Roger Canaff, a former prosecutor and legal expert for the Center for the Prosecution of Child Abuse.

Coming up on "News Four at Six", we'll tell you more about some steps that parents can take to help keep their children safe from abuse.
