Lt. Commander Kelsey Foster wasn't expecting any type of ceremony for his deployment.

"I was honored and surprised," he said.

Foster arrived at the Eastern Iowa Airport on Friday to begin his deployment to Afghanistan to an unexpected surprise.

A series of American flags held by the Patriot Guard Riders paved the way to the airport terminal.

There, at the top of the steps, was his father Larry heading the effort.

"It's very special because it's my son we're sending off," he said.

Larry has been there to honor hundreds of service men and women as a Patriot Guard Rider before.

This time, he was there to honor his son, which carried with it a little extra meaning.

"It's my son going to war, and you try not to have any additional feelings, but of course they are there," Larry Foster said.

"He's been part of this American Legion riders group for a long time, and so it's certainly an honor to have him do that for me," Kelsey Foster said.

It's an important reminder, the Riders said, that even as the United States' presence in Afghanistan has waned, more are still on their way out, selflessly fighting for freedom.

"It's an extraordinary job and different job than what most people are used to, but it's what you raise your hand and swear to do," Kelsey Foster said.

"I'm very proud of my son, but I would feel safer if he were at home," Larry Foster said.
