SANBORN, Iowa (KTIV) -

For years, Sanborn city administrator Jim Zeutenhorst has wanted to redo some of the downtown streets.

"Main Street hasn't had a lot done on it, other than seal coating, since the late '60s, early '70s," said Zeutenhorst.

Now, the city is hoping to find bidders for a $1.5 million project to replace sewers, gutters and curbs for its two main strips, First and Main streets.

"We felt like combining them makes the project a little larger, a little more attractive to bidders," said Zeutenhorst.

The road along First Street is a priority. Hundreds of trucks deliver milk to the AMPI dairy along that route every week.

"That's going to be replaced by concrete and it's also going to be widened by about four feet," said Zeutenhorst.

In late March, they started laying out the utilities, to show them just how far they can expand the road.

"It'll allow for better traffic flow.  Trucks keep getting larger, tractors keep getting larger," said Zeutenhorst.

The bonus for residents: They won't see a significant increase in property taxes.

"Because we've had some prior debt that's been paid off and we intend to keep our levy about where it is now," said Zeutenhorst.

The projects will partially be funded from tax increment financing dollars and federal grants

City leaders hope to have bids in for the project by the end of the month, with hopes of starting the repairs by early summer.
