Storm leading to power outages in South Dakota

Freezing rain is leading to power outages in eastern South Dakota.

Xcel Energy reports about 4,000 people without power in Sioux Falls, as power lines are downed by ice and by tree branches coated with ice.

Electricity also is out in the towns of Canistota and Winner.

Officials in Sioux Falls have activated their emergency operation center because of the storm blasting the state with freezing rain, heavy snow and strong winds.

City authorities say ice accumulation on roads, trees and power lines is leading to many emergency 911 calls.

The National Weather Service reported in Lincoln County in South Dakota four miles south of Sioux Falls, there is ice and tree damage.
