Auditor lobbies for "in-service" days on election days in Woodbury County

The next time you vote in Sioux City, children might not be in class. The city has 28 polling places, with 13 in schools.

Under a new proposal Woodbury County auditor Pat Gill says the county is discussing with school superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman, Election Day would become an "in-service" day for schools.

Gill has attended several seminars about moving voting outside of schools. Several parents have approached him about changing the way elections are held. Gill says safety isn't the only concern inside the schools, but in the parking lots, too.

"It gets pretty crazy in the mornings, when folks are dropping their children off at school and people are trying to go in there and vote at the same time," said Pat Gill, Woodbury County auditor.

Gill says one issue that's still being ironed out is determining whether schools that aren't used as polling sites would remain open on election days.

The first time the rule could potentially go into effect would be in 2014
