Slurping Soba competition

IZUMO CITY, Japan - In the U.S., people test the size of their stomachs with hot dogs and ice cream.

In Japan, they do it with soba noodles. A group of men went stomach-to-stomach in a noodle-eating contest in western Japan.

Izumo City is known as one of the three best places in the country for soba noodles.

The men are participating in the town's Second Annual Soba Grand Prix.

Fifteen contestants between 22 and 61 years old have ten minutes to eat as much as they can.

Last year's winner downed 17 plates of the noodles whereas three bowls is usually just right for meal.

This year's champion bested the record by slurping 23 plates.
