LARCHWOOD, Iowa (KTIV) -

Ice and high winds snapped power line poles in Lyon County like toothpicks, putting Larchwood residents in the dark for days.

"Tuesday night, at five o'clock it went out. Nothing there. Just never came back on," said Larchwood resident Mike Metzger.

Modern conveniences are gone for many, including heat.

"It's 50 degrees in my house. I don't have any electronics, or TV, or cell phone, or computer," said another resident Deb Ripperda.

L & O Power says about 14 miles of their transmission line was torn down, cutting a vital vein of energy that feeds the town of 860.

Utility crews estimate folks might be waiting until Saturday for power to be restored. They say it all depends on the weather.

"This is all up to Mother Nature. If we continue to have the events that we're having, anything could happen," said Lyon Rural Electric Cooperative General Manager Ross Loomans.

While folks wait, there's a lot of cleaning to do. The town is covered in tree branches that have ripped away from trunks and fallen onto garages and roads.

Despite all of it, though, the city says spirits are high.

"You know it hasn't been too bad. Everybody's pretty tough around here. Nobody's really been asking for anything. But we're here if they need it," said City Clerk Sandi De Smet.

The city says they have supplies at the community center for those who need them. Fire fighters have also gone door to door to check up on folk's welfare.
