Future of Johnson campaign war chest unknown

Outgoing U.S. Senator Tim Johnson hasn't made any decisions on what to do with his campaign war chest.

The 66-year-old South Dakota Democrat announced last month that he'll retire at the end of this third Senate term next year.

An online report from OpenSecrets.org says that he has more than $1.2 million in the bank.

Federal Election Commission rules limit how candidates can spend their campaign money.

For example, they can't use it for personal spending, and the amount they can give to other candidates is limited.

But there are many other options for Johnson, such as giving the money to charity or to the Democratic Party.

Chief of Staff Drey Samuelson says Johnson has plenty of time to decide what to do with the money.
