There was a father versus son matchup in boys soccer in Sioux City on Tuesday. Bishop Heelan coach George Tsiobanos, who started the North program, hosting the Stars, coached by his son Costa.
Heelan scored first in the first half. Off a free kick, John Oynes put the Crusaders up 1-0. Heelan would lead by that margin at half.
Second half, Heelan had a 2-1 lead with 7 minutes to play in the game. Simon Moore fired one into the back of the net to send the game to overtime tied at 2-2. After an overtime period, the game was decided by penalty kicks.
Stars goalie Elv-Reys Tan made some magnificent saves, stopping two Crusader kicks. North made their PK's count as they win 3-2 in a shootout.
"Against my dad it was not something I brought up at all during practice coming up to this game," Costa Tsiobanos said after the victory. "A little motivation right before the game. It's more dinner table bragging rights than anything."
