SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Some Sioux City students wear blue to raise awareness about their peers. Both kids and teachers at Spalding Park Elementary wore their blue to support the cause.

This is the first year the school has partnered with Mercy Child Advocacy Center, which offers support to families through parent education and prevention programs, to raise awareness.

Organizers are glad to do their part in raising awareness about a topic that some might not know much about.

"We're just going on what we know, what's reported, and we know that there are a lot of kids who are just to scared to talk about it," said Sherrie Schweder, Mercy Child Advocacy Center.

"It is an issue. No child should ever have to worry about feeling safe, and we feel very strongly that way as well. We just want to raise awareness that it is an issue," said Mary Motz, Spalding Park Elementary Principal.

The Mercy Child Advocacy Center says they would like to expand the wear blue day in the future.

You can contact the center at 712-279-2548.
