Defense shines in Wayne State Spring Game

The Black (defense) created five turnovers and held off a second half surge by the White (offense) to pick up a 42-32 win Saturday in the annual spring scrimmage for the Wayne State College football team played at Cunningham Field in Wayne.

The defense created four first half turnovers and held a 22-7 advantage at halftime thanks to fumble recoveries by redshirt freshman linebacker Nathan Scott, junior Ben Radel and redshirt freshman linebacker Nate Kroupa along with an interception by freshman Jon Davis.

The second half saw junior wide receiver Tonev Abraham lead a charge by the offense with two touchdowns, a 16 yard catch from freshman quarterback Zach Osborn and a 19-yarder from sophomore Brody Rohach to put the offense in front at 32-26.  But the defensive unit responded as redshirt freshman linebacker Trevor Meader had a 40 yard interception return for a touchdown followed by another interception by redshirt freshman defensive back Joey Biermann as the Black posted the 42-32 win over the White.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Osborn led the offense completing 7 of 11 passes for 92 yards and one TD.  Sophomore Brody Rohach was 12 of 19 with one TD and one interception for 88 yards followed by Nate Most going 3 for 10 for 48 yards with an interception.  Redshirt freshman quarterback Brian Kent ended 1 of 6 for 56 yards and a touchdown, a 56-yard strike in the second half to sophomore wide receiver Adam Stark.

Junior Charlie Davidson was the top rusher for WSC in the spring game with nine carries for 43 yards followed by freshman Jonathan Hawkins with 24 yards on six carries.

Tonev Abraham had a great day receiving hauling in nine catches for 136 yards and two scores followed by redshirt freshman tight end Eric Lammers with three catches for 17 yards. Sophomore Adam Stark added a 56-yard TD reception. 

Defensively, freshman defensive back Maurice Morrison and Chase Samuel had six tackles each with redshirt freshman linebacker Nathan Scott adding five to go with a sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.  Redshirt freshman linebacker Nate Kroupa was credited with five tackles and a fumble recovery. 

Wayne State nine starters on offense and eight on defense from a 2012 squad that was 6-5 for a sixth straight winning season. 

The Wildcats open the 2013 season at Northern State on Saturday, September 5th at 6 p.m.
