Players take a shot at 8-Ball championship

More than 1,100 top, amateur pool players racked up at the Sioux City Convention Center this weekend.

The 47th annual Midwest Regional 8-Ball Pool Championships returned to Sioux City to give players a shot at titles in both team and singles events.

The players have qualified through participation in pool leagues in Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska.

More than 150 players competed in the tournament over the weekend.

Many of the them have been participating for almost a decade and enjoy seeing familiar faces each year.

"I've been traveling out of town for this tournament for eight years. I love this tournament. It's a lot of fun, a lot of family, friends, everybody that I've known for the past eight years playing pool. It's a lot of fun; it's great," said Maureen Thomsen, a pool player from Omaha, NE.

This isn't like a friendly game of pool you might see at a local establishment.

Players and officials take things pretty seriously.

Referees are specially trained for these tournaments in Las Vegas.

"It teaches us the defined rules within VNEA, which is the league sanction that we play with. And, it's a good time," said Certified VNEA Referee Charles Godfrey.

Competitors banked on a shot at $42,000 in prizes.

The tournament is the longest running regional pool tournament in the United States.
