Over one-thousand women attended the 13th Annual United Way of Siouxland's Power Lunch.

This year's speaker was Elizabeth Smart.

Smart was kidnapped in 2002 and held prisoner for nine months.

She has a strong message of hope for women.

"I want them to walk away and be like, this has happened in my life and this is terrible, but I'm not going to let it hold me back, I'm not going to let it define who I am, or make me fall short of what I want, or what my goals are," Elizabeth Smart, speaker said.

Smart also works with law enforcement and parents to spread the message about keeping kids safe.

Over 80 percent of the time if the child fights back by yelling, kicking, biting, screaming, they will get away.

"But being able to defend themselves, being able to runaway, being able to find help, that will save someone's life," Smart said.

This event raises money for single parent scholarships.
