STARS offers special training for "healing" horses

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

People receive therapy from all kind of sources, even a horse. That's what Special Troopers Adaptive Riding school is all about.

Mental health professionals and others from all over the country gathered today in Sioux City for this one of a kind training that helps put the horse in the healing seat.

STARS Executive Director Stacy Pedersen says horses are empathetic, and bring things out of people, who may not even realize what they're doing is therapeutic. "The horses don't judge people, they don't know if you have a mental illness or that you are struggling financial or need to see a counselor, they don't know that but they do sense things," said Stacy Pedersen, Executive Director at STARS.

The Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association is behind the training.

The group teaches this type of animal-assisted therapy nationwide.
