MRHD cashes checks from Argosy hours after getting Hard Rock deal

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Hours after the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission awarded Woodbury County's land-based gaming license to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, it's non-profit partner cashed seven months of checks from the Argosy riverboat casino.

The checks, written to Argosy's current non-profit partner, Missouri River Historical Development, totaled nearly $1 million.

MRHD and the Argosy, which is owned by Penn National Gaming, had a contract, until it expired July 7th.

Initially, the two couldn't agree on a new contract. Still, the Argosy sent checks totaling three percent of gross gaming revenue to MRHD.

MRHD's attorney says those checks, issued after the contract expired, came with a notation. It said the checks were sent as the two worked toward a contract extension.

"MRHD received a check in October that was, it had a notation on it that the check was issued under contract between MRHD and the Argosy. At the advice of our attorney's, we did not cash those until a couple of weeks ago. At the advice of our attorney's, we cashed them," said Mark Monson, MRHD president.

MRHD will award grants to non-profit, and government groups, in Woodbury County on May 15th.
