SIOUX FALLS, SD (KTIV) -

Morningside's baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a non-conference doubleheader against NCAA Division II Augustana College on Sunday in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Mustangs lost the opener 10-2 and were no-hit in the nightcap 7-1 to finish the regular season with a record of 22-25.

The Vikings put the opener away early when they led 7-0 after the first inning. Augustana's first four batters of the game all hit singles and its next two batters reached base after they were hit by a pitch. The Vikings had six hits in the inning, including a three-run triple by leadoff batter Jake Petersen on his second at-bat of the inning.

Morningside scored both of its runs in the second inning when Josh Gross singled and scored on a groundout by Trevor Miller and when Cole Halgerson reached base on an error and came home on a RBI single by Tanner McWilliams.

The Mustangs finished the game with seven hits, including two each from Gross and Halgerson.

Augustana starting pitcher Tyson Gau allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts over the first four innings to get the win.

The Vikings Michael Wellman threw a no-hitter in the second game. He walked two and struck out 11.

Despite not having a hit, the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when A.J. Staiert led off the game with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice by Britt Anderson, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

Augustana answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and led the rest of the way.

Morningside will face Midland in a noon contest in the opening round of the GPAC Baseball Championship post-season tournament on Thursday in Hastings, Neb.
