Northwestern College nearing completion of major building project

Northwestern College hopes to have its new learning commons open by the fall. Northwestern College hopes to have its new learning commons open by the fall.

Students that have walked by the center of Northwestern College's campus have seen workers building up a new learning commons. Ground was broken last April on the $14 million facility.

Northwestern officials say it's been completely funded by private donations and alumni. They say it will be much more than a library, with a tutoring center, rooms for academic support, and even a cafe.

School leaders say they're humbled by the community support and can't wait to open it up.

"It's really been exciting for us to see. I think it's exciting for prospective students to see and also our current students, as they've heard about this project for a while now. And just what it's going to do, from the standpoint of collaborative learning, is really exciting," said Greg Christy, president of Northwestern College.

The new learning commons should be completed by the fall semester, with a grand opening scheduled for late September. School officials would also like to renovate the old library as well.
