The Iowa boys and girls state track meets start May 16th in Des Moines. There were perfect conditions for Monday's city track meet, with the four city schools, Sgt. Bluff-Luton and South Sioux competing.
We start with the shot put. North's Max Stewart takes first with a toss of just over 46 feet.
In the boys 1600 meter run, Bishop Heelan senior Alec DeVries leads the Crusaders to a 1-2-3 finish.
Girls shuttle hurdle relay, Mackenzie Geary anchoring Heelan to a first place finish in 1 minute and 10 seconds. Geary, also a winner in the 100 hurdles, says with the weather turning around she hopes to get where she needs to be for districts and state.
"It's been hard to practice hurdles and high jump because we can't really practice inside and it's been really cold and snowy," Geary said. "That's been tough, but I think that as I'm going into these final few meets, I think I'm getting stronger, so that helps."
On the boys side, South Sioux City's Alex Borchers is first in the 110 hurdles crossing in 16 seconds.
In the girls 4x200 meter relay, East freshman Brittany Calvillo anchors the Black Raiders to the win in 1 minute 32 seconds.
In the girls 100 meter dash Heelan's Yasmine Rose edges out Calvillo by three hundredths of a second, 11.87 to 11.90 to take first.
A rematch from the Drake Relays in the boys 100. East's Ronald Nash beats Heelan's Zack Skibinski, by one-100th of a second.
"Felt good to redeem myself here today," Nash said. "I feel like I should have won. I got out pretty bad at Drake, so it felt good to redeem myself out here today."
