Sioux City Police Chief Doug Young says Officer Kevin McCormick was shot Monday afternoon during a routine seat belt traffic stop.  Chief Young says 21-year-old Jamal Dean got out of the front passenger side of the vehicle and opened fire sending 8 rounds through the windshield of McCormick's police car.

McCormick was hit in the forehead.  The bullet has been removed, and Officer McCormick is expected to recover.

Two women and three children were also in the car with Dean.  Chief Young says one is believed to be his girlfriend, and the other woman an acquaintance.  The children were taken into protective custody.

Police are still searching for Dean.  Chief Young asks Dean to give himself up and put the community at ease.  Young will not speculate on Dean's whereabouts, but does say the department's received several leads from the public.  Young says before the shooting there was a warrant out for Dean's arrest in connection with a previous armed robbery.

The weapon in Monday's shooting, a .22 caliber altered rifle, was recovered a few blocks from the shooting scene in a garbage can in an alley way.
