UPDATE: Officer expected to make a full recovery after shooting

Police continue their search for a man accused of shooting a Sioux City police officer in broad daylight. Meanwhile, we're learning more details about led up to the shooting and how that officer is doing.

35-year old Kevin McCormick had only been on the force for 15-months when he made a traffic stop that would change his life forever. The stop was for a seatbelt violation in the alley between West 3rd and 4th just off of Hamilton. But, police say before Officer McCormick could even get out of his squad car, 21-year old Jamal Dean jumped out of the front passenger seat of the vehicle that was pulled over, and began shooting at the officer's windshield. One of those bullets struck McCormick in the forehead. McCormick was released from the hospital after having that bullet surgically removed.

More than half a dozen agencies are helping Sioux City P-D in this massive manhunt. And, a warrant for attempted murder has been issued nationwide. "Give yourself up," said Doug Young, Sioux City Police Chief. "You will be caught. There's no doubt about that. So make it a little easy on everybody and put the community at ease."

McCormick's squad car has seven bullet holes in the windshield, another on the hood. Chief Young says Dean was trying to murder his officer.

Although police recovered the weapon he allegedly used near the scene of the crime, the public should still consider him armed and dangerous. Police say 21-year old Jamal Dean is a known gang member. His street name is "Outlaw." He had an outstanding warrant for his arrest in an armed robbery earlier this month. The police chief says he is also suspected in several shootings.

Chief Young said police did a thorough search of the west side where the shooting happened. That's why they extended their search to the entire city. The car he was in had Nebraska plates. Police call Dean a transient and say he has several locations. They also feel that he's getting help staying hidden.
