DES MOINES, Iowa (KTIV) -

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey is staying put.  He said Thursday morning that he will not seek the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by longtime Senator Tom Harkin.

Northey says he was encouraged to run by many Iowans, but decided against it after talking it over with his family.

The Spirit Lake farmer says he will give his full support to Republican Congressman Steve King if he decides to run for the Senate seat.  If King decides against running, Northey says he will support whoever is nominated by the Republican party.
