Ways to cope after experiencing a traumatic event

When you're constantly thinking about or reliving the event, then it might be time to seek some professional help. When you're constantly thinking about or reliving the event, then it might be time to seek some professional help.

Life can be stressful enough, but add a traumatic event or awful news, it can make it even more difficult.  There are ways to cope and deal with those feelings in productive ways.
From the Boston Marathon bombings, to the city-wide manhunt for a suspected police shooter, there's been some pretty shocking news lately, both nationally and locally.

Counselor Jessica Dominowski with Mercy Medical Center says those events affects us all in different ways.

"This is a very abnormal situation and it shakes our core," says Dominowski.  "What we have known to be safe is now being compromised."

And people who've witnessed or been a victim of a traumatic event may need some extra help to deal with their experiences.

"When we are exposed to that, there are ways we need to process that or kind of debrief ourselves and find different ways of coping with that," says Dominowski.

When we are constantly thinking about or reliving the event, it can disrupt our lives.  Then it might be time to seek some professional help.

"We can also get really stuck on certain things and that is the part that can be really disruptive in our lives," says Dominowski.

Dominowski says there are also things you can do at home to regain that balance in your life.
She suggests keeping a journal, talking to friends and family, setting a time limit to think about the event then move on, drinking water, laughing, and exercising.

"Just start moving again because we get stationary and kind of freeze in an indirect way and we need to keep moving forward," says Dominowski.

Dominowski says don't try to do all of those things at once.  That can be overwhelming.  She says start with one thing to regain the balance in your life again
