The Iowa high school state track meet starts two weeks from Thursday. Qualifying meets are May 9th and as a warm up, the Missouri River Conference held their league meet in Sioux City with seven schools taking part.
Bishop Heelan was 1-2 in the boys 1600 meter run. Down the stretch, Alec Pavone pulls away to overtake teammate Tommy Thelen. The winning time, 4:41.
In the girls 800, the finish was not as close. Heelan junior Lindsay Joyce wins in 2:28. West junior Alyssa Nash with a strong kick to finish second. Joyce has only lost once in the 800 and also won the 1500.
"Our coach always says get out in the first 200 and then just kind of go from there," said Joyce. "I feel like I got out in the first 200 and then just tried to maintain my pace the entire time."
In the girls 200, Heelan's Yasmeen Rose wins a close race with East's Riley Zyzda to win the conference title.
The boys 200 meters goes to East High's Ronald Nash in 22 seconds. Nash also won the 100. West High's Gerald Heiskell was second in the 200.
