I29 construction in Sioux City will also require Gordon drive overhaul

The massive reconstruction of Interstate 29 will also impact Sioux City's Gordon Drive.

The process of expanding the interstate will create new exits. That includes bringing southbound traffic that now exits to Nebraska street over to Virginia street.

That means during 2014, construction crews will be reconstructing Gordon Drive as well. The focus will be a stretch from the viaduct to just past Pearl Street.

The Iowa Department of Transportation said the work is needed to handle the increase in traffic.

"The ease of getting to and from the interstate, the safety improvements, especially in the geometry of the ramps, the on and off opportunities will greatly improve," said Dakin Schultz, Iowa Department of Transportation.

Schultz said the bulk of that work will take place in 2014, the very same time Interstate 29 work will be underway on the section from the old Floyd Channel to the Floyd River.

According to Schultz, potential detours for traffic are still being worked out.
