Gehlen Catholic students pack meals for Honduras

LE MARS, Iowa (KTIV) -

Gehlen Catholic High School students and folks from Opportunities Unlimited spent Friday working on a special project.

Every student—preschool through 12th grade—and every staff member left the classroom for the gym.

They were working with a Siouxland non-profit organization called "Then Feed Just One," which is designed to help fight hunger around the world, one meal at a time.

In the past, students and staff from Gehlen traveled to Honduras. They started by just bringing vitamins, but quickly learned the biggest need was for food that lasts.

"Everything there is either freeze-dried or in the solid form that you don't have to worry so much about the expiration dates," said Mike Bride, CFO for Opportunities Unlimited, Inc.

Students packed meals with rice, grains, and other non-perishables. The bags are then weighed and boxed up. Volunteers say that food goes a long way.

Fabio Rivera, a Honduras native, is now a senior at Gehlen. He says he's proud to see the whole school working to help others.

"It's really great, the fact that the help is coming from outside, that's really good. I have a lot of respect for this school and all the people that's involved," said Rivera.

Students and staffs worked in shifts throughout the day. Each volunteer paid $30 to help pay for the cost of the food.
