DYERSVILLE (KWWL) -

Dorothy Foxen just reached an incredible milestone, 50 years in the same job!

"You don't see it, and I don't know if I'll ever see it in my lifetime of working with anybody," said Principal Peter Smith.

Dorothy Foxen said the job with St. Francis Xavier Catholic School was supposed to be temporary.

"I received a call from one of my former principals asking me if I would be interested in coming to work for the summer," said Dorothy Foxen.

Shortly after starting, Foxen was offered a full-time job.

At first, she worked between the elementary school and the high school. When Beckman Catholic High School opened in 19-66, she opted to stay at Xavier with the preschool through sixth graders.

"I like working with the kids, interacting with them and helping them with their needs and little bumps along the road. Making them feel good makes me feel good," said Foxen.

Foxen keeps the office running: answering phones, filling out paperwork and keeping track of students.

Principal Peter Smith said Dorothy exemplifies the Catholic mission.

"The mission of the church is service, and she's lived the testimonial of that. She's been serving us for 50 years and does it with great energy and great joy," said Smith.

To thank the Dyersville native for her five decades of service, the school declared May 1st as Dorothy Day. She started on May 1, 1963.

The students wrote messages for Dorothy on paper hearts and presented her with a quilt. They also had a picnic lunch in honor of Dorothy Day.

"Very giving, very friendly, hardworking and just a positive person," said Peter Smith.

Foxen said she's had a great job the last 50 years, largely thanks to the teachers and staff.

"I think the dedication of our teachers that are here. They work so hard and they put their best foot forward all the time," said Foxen.

Dorothy wants everyone to know she is NOT retiring just yet, and no one at the school is complaining that she's sticking around a little longer.
