Major reconstruction of Hwy. 63 in Hudson starts Monday

HUDSON (KWWL) -

It's finally starting to feel like summer, and soon summer road construction will be in full swing.  Several projects could impact your commute starting this week and continuing well into the fall.

One of those projects is along Highway 63.  It will be rebuilt from just south of Hudson north to the intersection with Highway 20.  A new road is badly needed, but the long construction process comes with some concerns.

If you've driven along highway 63 through Hudson, you've probably noticed a lot of bumps in the road.  But soon, its surface will be smoother, as the Iowa Department of Transportation will begin a complete reconstruction of the road Monday.

"It's a road that needs improved, so we're looking forward to getting it done," said Bill Colwell of Bill Colwell Ford.

But local business owners aren't without concern.  Entirely redoing the highway will mean a six-month shut down of the roughly five mile stretch of road that runs through the heart of Hudson.

"Business are concerned anytime a road is closed, especially if people think the detour might take the a long ways out of the way," said Colwell.

The Hudson detour won't do that, so businesses are just hoping people don't bypass town, and will take the few extra minutes to use the detours.

"Hudson has 50 or 60 businesses in total, and they're all open. They're all just five extra minutes away using the detour of Highway 58," Colwell said.

"During this detour, I think the attitude needs to be that not only are we going to survive, we're going to thrive," said Scott Wienands with Nutri-Ject Systems, Inc.

To help, road work will be done in phases, and many side streets will remain open.

"We will be providing access to all the businesses throughout the project.  We'll be providing signage off Highway 58 so people know where the businesses are.  So we've been working with them and will throughout the project to keep the lines of communication open," Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa Department of Transportation said.

The Hudson Chamber of Commerce is also spending extra money on signs to make sure people continue coming to local businesses during the long highway construction.  While redoing the road will be an inconvenience, the DOT, Hudson residents and businesses, think it will be worth it in the long run to have a brand new highway.

"It will be much safer and much nicer!" said Mark Grove, general manager of East Central Iowa Co-op.

Hudson school bus routes won't be impacted by the early phases of construction.
