Morningside steamrolls Hastings, wins GPAC Tournament Championship

The Mustangs won their fourth straight GPAC Tournament. The Mustangs won their fourth straight GPAC Tournament.

The Morningside softball team's bats came alive at just the right time, exploding for 22 hits and six home runs as the Mustangs won 19-8 and 10-1 to claim the GPAC Tournament Championship.

In game one, the Mustangs wasted little time, scoring three in the first inning, highlighted by Michelle Brockamp's three run homerun to put M'side up 6-0.

Two innings later it was it was Shelby Feldt providing the power, connecting for a three run homer of her own to give the Maroon and White a commanding 9-0 lead.

After Hastings pulled to within 9-1 with a run in the bottom of the third, the Mustangs answered with a 10 run fourth inning, highlighted by Kirsten Dargy's grand slam.

Scoreless after three innings in the winner take all finale, Morningside scored four in the fourth to open up a 4-0 lead.

Kati Steffen led the inning off with a solo home run.  With two out in the frame Taylor Daas  and Kristina Neumann provided the final runs of the inning with an RBI double and triple.

Senior Mackenzie Neely added a solo home run in the fifth inning as the Mustangs took a 5-2 lead into the sixth.

With one out and the bases loaded, senior Jordan Johnson worked a bases loaded walk, scoring Neumann. 

The very next at bat, Steffen connected for her second homer of the game, a grand slam, as Morningside clinched the GPAC Tournament Championship.

The opening round of the national tournament begins May 13th.
