13 people escape Cedar Rapids house fire

Thirteen people escape a fire at a Cedar Rapids apartment early Monday morning. Fire fighters were called to the 400 block of 14th Street SE around 8:15 a.m. Monday.

Fire officials say a tenant heard the smoke alarm sounding in an adjacent apartment. When she went to go look, she saw smoke and flames. They say she and other helped notify neighbors.

Fire fighters say 13 people including seven children all got out safely. Several apartments were damaged by the fire. The Red Cross is helping the displaced tenants.

Greg Below, Cedar Rapids Fire Department said they were fortunate with the number of people in the apartment, that there wasn't any injuries.
