BENTON COUNTY (KWWL) -

A former Benton County Conservation director will be sentenced on charges of theft and misconduct after an investigation showed he bought thousands of dollars of fuel for his personal use.

William Gerald Heber of Walford pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree theft and felonious misconduct in office.

Both charges are class D felonies, each of which carry maximum penalties of five years in prison and $7,500 in fines.

He will be sentenced June 27 at 1 p.m.

Heber was charged on Aug. 21, 2012 after an investigation alleged he made $2,794.02 in fuel purchases for his personal use beginning in March of 2011.

Heber was the director of Benton County Conservation from Nov. 7, 2007 through Nov. 7, 2011.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa State Auditor investigated the incident.
