NORTH LIBERTY (KWWL) -
Dozens of people in gave blood in North Liberty Monday in honor of one of the city's firefighters. Bob Parker was diagnosed with a form of leukemia last year. He's received more than 60 units of blood and 20 units of platelets.
Monday the fire department held a blood drive in hopes of restoring the area's blood supply. Parker's been a volunteer firefighter in North Liberty for 40 years.
"It means the world to me that the department would do this and that the people of North Liberty would come out and support me like they have," said Parker. "I'm very honored that they did that."
Parker is now producing blood on his own and no longer needs transfusions.
Anyone who wants to donate in his honor can by giving blood at the Degowin Blood Center in Iowa City.
