A cold spring delays the reopening of a NW Iowa campground

The reopening of a popular campground at a state park in the Iowa Great Lakes is being pushed back due to the abnormally cold, wet spring.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources had originally hoped to have the campground at the Emerson Bay State Recreation area on West Lake Okoboji reopened in time for the busy Memorial Day weekend.

Officials now say that won't happen.

They say the conditions are making it very difficult to restore grass in the campground and they're worried that reopening it now could cause erosion and damage landscaping from a $600,000 renovation.

The campground has been closed since June of last year.

The DNR says they'll continue to monitor conditions and will make another determination in June.

At this point they're not ruling out the possibility that it could even be closed over 4th of July, but that isn't definite.
