The Iowa high school state track meet starts next Thursday in Des Moines. The qualifying meets were Thursday night, with first place winners earning a state ticket and second place finishers having to wait and see if their time would be good enough.
There were 13 schools competing in a Class 1A meet in Hawarden.
In the girls 200 meters, Hinton's Haley Grenko pulls away from West Lyon's Rachel Simons to win. Grenko also won the 100 and anchored the 4X200 relay to a win.
In the boys 200 meters, Hinton sophomore Blake Mossberg is first in 22 seconds. West Lyon's Kyle Groeneweg was second.
Another win for the Blackhawks in the 400 hurdles. Lauren Hedlund finishes way out in front, in 1-minute 5 seconds. Boys 400 hurdles, West Lyon's Kyle Standley wins in 57 seconds. He's going back to state for the third year in a row.
Hinton wins again in the boys distance medley relay. Senior Drew Schiltz with a strong final 800 meters to finish in front of Lawton-Bronson.
"I couldn't let my teammates down. This is a chance to go to state so I did it for them," said Schiltz. "I had to do it for my mom, I love her, and I just had to do it for myself."
The Sibley-Ocheyedan girls won the sprint medley relay. The Generals also took first in the girls 1500. Junior Leah Sievert, who won the state title in that race as a freshman, wins by a whopping 50 seconds.
