UPDATE: Jamal Dean makes first court appearance in Sioux City
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Shooting suspect Jamal Dean made his initial appearance in Woodbury County Court Friday afternoon. The 21-year-old was charged with attempted murder. Bond was set at $1,000,000. He was also charged with robbery, burglary, and theft, with a bond for those charges set at $50,000. Dean was appointed a public defender. His next court date is May 20, 2013. Dean will remain in the custody of the Woodbury County Sheriff.
Deputies left earlier this week to extradite Dean to Sioux City, according to Woodbury County Sheriff Dave Drew. He says four deputies and an EMT left Wednesday night, shortly after confirmation that Dean had signed his extradition papers. They took two vehicles, one a marked squad car and one an unmarked vehicle, driving 36 hours with 6 hours of sleep.
Dean was arrested during a massive manhunt following the shooting of Sioux City Police Officer Kevin McCormick.
