WATERLOO (KWWL) -

After years of planning, a brand-new sports complex is close to completion in downtown Waterloo.

Just more than a year after breaking ground, the $26 million Cedar Valley Sportsplex is really taking shape.

Standing in front of the new building, or as you drive by, it looks huge. But the footprint of the new Sportsplex still isn't complete with a lot left to build in the next few months.

While there are similar facilities in the area, community leaders insist there's a big need for the Sportsplex and are anxious for its grand opening this fall.

The Cedar Valley Sportsplex will be yet another piece of major post-2008 flood development in downtown Waterloo.

"This may be kind of be the capstone of it down here," said Rick Young with the Cedar Valley Sportsplex project.

As visitors stand inside, the first floor will have office space and a daycare area. Across the way, they'll find a zero-entry recreation pool with a slide and swimming lanes.

On the back side of the lot, you can just see the beginnings of where there will be two full-sized basketball courts.

Also in that area is one of the unique features for the facility: the indoor turf soccer fields.  Above that, you'll be able run or walk on a 1/6th-mile indoor track.

Those facilities will be part of what Sportsplex developers hope will draw people here.

"We've got a golf facility in here that retirees or people in the middle of winter can come and hit golf balls, and nobody else has that," Young said.

Also on the second floor, you'll be able to find exercise equipment and fitness classrooms -- features Sportsplex leaders say are needed to help meet the growing need for year-round recreation in the community.

"We were hearing from a lot of our businesses. They were trying to hire people to come to the Cedar Valley, and they need facilities like this to compete with the South, West, and Mountain states because younger couples and families want a place to recreate, and we're pretty limited on that," said Young.

"We think this facility will open that up and provide for employment around here too."

While a lot of progress has been made in the past year, there's still a lot left to do -- but developers are confident the Cedar Valley Sportsplex will be ready to open its doors around Thanksgiving.

As of now, the Sportsplex still has about $2 million left to raise to pay for the building's construction. Once it's finished in November, the Waterloo Leisure Services Department will run the Sportsplex. A family membership will cost just $62 a month.
