Ousted IRS chief Steven Miller testifies before Congress on targeting of Tea Party groups

Posted:
WASHINGTON (NBC) -

The ousted head of the Internal Revenue Service was on the hot seat on Capitol Hill Friday.

Steve Miller apologized for what he called "mistakes", but denied the IRS targeted Tea Party groups for ideological reasons, and denied that he tried to keep it secret.

"I want to apologize on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service for the mistakes that we made and the poor service we provided," Miller stated.

But he said IRS agents in Cincinnati asked Tea Party groups for their donor lists and dragged out their applications for tax exempt status just to ease their own workload.

"I do not believe that partisanship motivated the people who engaged in the practices described," Miller testified.
