Mapleton, Iowa has made a remarkable recovery since a tornado touched down two years ago. But, the work continues.
Sixty homes have been rebuilt. Still, the town is spotted with empty lots, where people have chosen not to rebuild.
Some homes are still waiting to be demolished. Officials say they were told to expect the recovery effort to take five to ten years. The next step? Studying the towns transportation and housing needs, as well as, developing a master plan for Mapleton. Marie Whiting, Rebuild & Recovery Coordinator says, "We want Mapleton to come back better than it was before the tornado, and that mean that we have to have the sufficient plans to do that," says Marie Whiting.
The town recently received a $14,000 "Iowa's Living Roadways" grant to help replant trees, and fix the landscaping along the city's main street.
