New Ponca, NE school has 'safe rooms' for students

Ponca, Nebraska's school is now two-years-old. But, it has been prepared to protect students from severe weather from 'day one.'

The first thing crews built on the site? Four 'safe rooms' to shelter the student body in case of severe weather.

The 2011 tornado that hit Jackson, Nebraska, showed students, and staff, in Ponca, that their new school should offer students the best protection. Bob Hayes, Jackson, NE Elementary Principal said, "We had some board members that saw... that were actually in the Jackson community that expressed that was something that they wanted. The other board members were right on board with them. Our administration was on board with them. And, I think everybody realized after seeing what happened here in Jackson, that that was something that  was very important to a school."

The new building replaced the old one, originally built in 1917.
