BackPack food for kids program announces plans for expansion

More children will be fed with the help of Food Bank of Siouxland.

Emerson Elementary students will receive weekly snacks to send home with children in need.

And in addition to that, Linda Scheid, Executive Director of the Food Bank, says the group will also distribute backpacks of food through the summer months at the same schools.

Grant money helped with the expansion, but Scheid says the group is mostly excited to be helping more kids.

"These children will say things to us like 'because I took that fruit snack home, I know I won't be as hungry this weekend' or "we don't have to go somewhere else seeking food because we don't have those resources.' They know mom and dad have empty cupboards, and so this program helps support them and it's exciting to them," Linda Sheid, Executive Director of the Food Bank of Siouxland said.

The summer BackPack: Food for Kids Program begins June 5th.

Kids will get the packs at the end of the week during the 9 week summer program at the schools.
