BUCHANAN COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Buchanan County Sheriff's Department says a semi was swept off the roadway after trying to drive through floodwater on Highway 20.

Deputies were called to the 270 mile marker around 8:05 p.m.

A freightliner, weighing about 43,000 pounds, attempted to go through the water pouring over the highway, but was instead swept into the median.

The driver was uninjured.

Highway 20 was temporarily closed in both directions while crews worked to remove the semi.

In a press release the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office said, "There are numerous roadways in Buchanan County with water running over them. The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office STRONGLY urges that people DO NOT drive through standing or flowing water over any roadway. Very strong and fast moving water can sweep any type of vehicle, heavy or light, off the roadway in a matter of seconds."
