Water level down in New Hartford, officials optimistic

NEW HARTFORD (KWWL) -

Emergency management officials are breathing a little bit easier in New Hartford, but the community is "not out of the woods" quite yet.

Friday morning Emergency Coordinator Mitch Nordmeyer said water from Beaver Creek has gone down and no longer running over Ridge Avenue, which acts as a levee.  Nordmeyer called the situation "optimistic news."  But he also warned, the water is still right up to Ridge Avenue.

It's a better situation than Thursday afternoon, when the water running over Ridge Ave was 18 inches deep.

People living in New Hartford have been told to prepare to evacuate if the levee breaks. If it does, officials say they'll have about 90 minutes to get everyone out.  Crews will leave things like sand bags in place through the weekend.

Red Cross disaster workers are on standby in Butler County and ready to open a shelter if needed for New Hartford residents.

Representatives from Homeland Security and the Army Corps of Engineers have been in New Hartford, but left the community early Friday.

Sioux City's Urban Search and Rescue Team deployed eight members and an amphibious vehicle to help with flood mitigation in Butler County. The team is highly trained, and has specialized equipment to help local agencies before and during severe flooding along Beaver Creek.

Beaver Creek days is postponed to July.
