SUNDAY UPDATE: Johnson County Flooding

Posted: Updated:

Dry weather and a dry forecast have lowered the expected crest of the Coralville Reservoir.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers now predicts a crest on June 7 at 711.5 feet.  That's 1.3 feet lower than the projection provided Saturday.  It also means the water will not overtop the spillway.  The peak outflow is expected to reach 19,500 cubic ft/second on June 7.  It's currently 18,000 cfs at the spillway and 19,200 cfs at the Burlington St. Dam in Iowa City.

Johnson Co. Emergency Management reports that due to the current projections, 64 structures across the county are vulnerable to flooding with damages estimated around $2 million.  30 of the structures would be in unincorporated areas of the county.

Boating and swimming are prohibited on the Iowa River south of the Coralville Dam.  Officials say they have responded to calls of people being in or near the water over the last 24 hours.  Water activities continue to be permitted at the Coralville Reservoir, Lake MacBride, and the Cedar River in Johnson County.

The University of Iowa, Coralville, and Iowa City report progress with flood preparations.  Iowa City is evaluating the need to close Rocky Shore Dr. Monday or Tuesday.  City officials have recommended evacuations for people living in the 800 block of Normandy Drive as well as people living in the Taft Speedway area.

Mandatory evacuations continue to be in place for areas along Sand Rd SE from 560th St to Highway 22, and for Lola Lane SE and Tri County Bridge Rd.

The United Way continues to operate the emergency volunteer center at the Johnson County Fairgrounds.  Those needing assistance or who want to volunteer should call 319-337-8657.
