X's pitcher Jimmer Kennedy receives a hug during a game with the Challenger Little League.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
You can find the Challenger Little League enjoying America's Pastime on Sunday nights at Pulaski Park in Sioux City.
But, for the third year in a row the league and the Explorers teamed up for some afternoon fun at Lewis & Clark Park. For more than 20 years, the Challenger Little League has offered an opportunity to mentally and physically challenged kids and adults ages 5 to 21 throughout Siouxland to enjoy the game of baseball.
Cissy Miller and her 12-year old son, Amari Dean, have been involved with the program for five years. She say it's a joy to watch her son grow on the baseball field.
"It's just fabulous that they have the opportunity to go out here and learn to be on a team and learn skills that sports provide for them," Miller said. "It's the one game a week where there is no stress, no agitation to it. It's just go out there and have fun and everybody has a great time doing it."
"Did you have fun today?" "Yes," Dean, added.
When these athletes hit the field, it isn't about winning or losing, it's all about the love of the game. Paired with the X's, it's also an opportunity to share special moments.
"Anytime anyone gives you a hug, you feel good," X's pitcher Jimmer Kennedy said. "Especially when it means you did something nice and makes somebody feel good about themselves, that makes it extra special."
"These players can accomplish anything. They're really dedicated. They really try their best to do everything they can to play the sport, to learn" Rick Andersen, Coach of Opportunities Unlimited added. "I admire them."
