Password saves child from attempted kidnapper

Posted:

Having a secret password that only you and your child know isn't a game.

It could save your child from being abducted.

That's what happened in Roland, Iowa, where Vanessa Peng says a password saved a boy from a suspected kidnapper.

"Come on," Ashley Lindstrom, the boy's mother said.

Ashley Lindstrom never thought it would happen in Roland.

"I was more scared that anything," Lindstrom said.

The Story County Sheriff's Office says around nine Monday night, near the Roland pool a 13-year-old boy was approached by a white male in his 30's in a red 4-door truck, offering him a ride.

"...just a block away from where I live," Lindstrom said.

The man told the boy, his mom had sent him, but mother and son have a password set up when something like this comes up.

"He asked the guy the password and he didn't know it so the kid just kind of took off after that," Roger Fritz, the Mayor of Roland said.

The boy was not followed.

His stranger danger pact with mom though has been introduced into many Roland households.

"We mainly set our older daughter down, she's going to be 8 next month, we sat her down and we put a password of our own," Lindstrom said.

Lindstrom also runs a daycare from her home.

"I don't want that to happen to my daycare kids let alone. I have two daughters of my own," Lindstrom said.

Lindstrom and other parents in town, like Mayor Roger Fritz, think a password is an effective way to keep kids in Roland and beyond safe.

"This password thing's a great idea to have that conversation with your kids. I've already had that conversation," Fritz said.

"We told her you know unless someone picks you up and knows that password you don't go with them. You walk or run the other way," Lindstrom said.
