Businesses, homes damaged in northern Iowa tornadoes

Posted:

North Central Iowa was ground zero for severe weather Wednesday night. Not one, but at least two tornadoes touched down.

The hardest hit area appears to be near Belmond, Iowa. The small community in Wright county is northeast of Fort Dodge, Iowa and west of Interstate 35.

Authorities received reports of homes and businesses with damage. Duwayne Abel, owner of Cattleman's Steaks & Provisions restaurant, said a tornado swooped through his business' parking lot on Wednesday night and demolished part of the building. Abel wasn't at the restaurant but saw the tornado from a distance. No one was inside the restaurant.

A spokesperson with Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management said there are reports of at least two businesses and a home that are destroyed in Wright County, but there are no reports of injuries.

Damage has also been reported in Franklin County, near Alexander, Sheffield and Hampton.

The National Weather Service says spotters reported multiple tornadoes in the area, but a final tally won't be available until Thursday.

A meteorologist said at least two tornadoes were reported alongside one another near Hampton.

More than 1,200 customers in northern Iowa have lost power because of the storms.

A massive line of storms packing hail, lightning and tree-toppling winds is expected to affect states from Iowa to Maryland.
