Flood-damaged bridge collapses in northwest Iowa

A $50,000 bill to repair a northwest Iowa bridge damaged by Memorial Day flooding has grown to a $400,000 bill to replace the span after it collapsed.

The 110th Street bridge over Willow Creek north of Remsen fell into the water last week.

Flooding from heavy rains in late May had eroded the banks on both sides of the bridge.

The Plymouth County engineer told supervisors that the damaged bridge already was a likely candidate for federal relief dollars to repair it.

Now that it needs to be replaced, the federal aid picture is unclear.

A three-mile detour has been posted around the collapsed bridge.
