Master's program at BCU gives teachers new opportunities

Briar Cliff University is offering a Master of Arts in Education that will allow teachers to get their Masters Degree, but stay in a teaching position rather than moving to an administrative role.

The programs fits with Iowa Governor Terry Branstad's education reform plan to provide exceptional teachers to every classroom in the state.

It is a leadership-based course that will prepare teachers to serve as mentors to newer teachers.

The course, which is taken online, caters to the busy lives of Iowa's educators.

"Our current teachers are very well prepared in Iowa. We have a very strong reputation. A Master's Degree provides more opportunities for teachers to learn. Sometimes we're so busy teaching, we don't have opportunities to read and reflect, so this gives a chance for teachers to do that," said Dr. Kristen Crabtree-Groff, Division Chair of Education.

BCU modeled the course after other state programs, but also broadened their scope to global education movements.
