SIOUX CITY (KTIV) -
It doesn't feel like hockey weather, but the Sioux City Musketeers are starting the process of putting their next team together. Starting Friday and continuing through Sunday, the Muskies are playing twelve games at their tryout camp, to see who will make the roster in the fall.
New head coach Jay Varady insists that no-one has clinched a spot on the team for next season. Eighty-six players are at the tryout camp, along with 13 goalies.
The players come from all over the United States, Canada, and from as far away as Sweden and Russia.
For the new coaching staff, it's an opportunity to see if their returning players, and newcomers, fit the new system.
"Our identity as a group is going to be about attacking," said Varady. "It's going to be a team that attacks the net offensively. When we lose the puck we're going to want to pressure that thing. We want to get it back as quick as possible. While we're doing that we're going to be a physical team. And when we turn the puck over we're going to try to transition that thing and attack again."
Games run from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday. The Future Prospects All-Star game is at 11:30 on Sunday. The Main Camp all-star game is at 2:30 Sunday, all at the IBP Ice Center.
